Carbon Credits

marmot-in-tree

Since the 1990s, there have been programs for landowners to sell carbon credits that organizations use to offset their emissions. These programs required a great deal of legal framework and field inventory, preventing feasibility for small (>5,000 acre) landowners. However, in the past couple years several organizations have developed programs that allow landowners with as few as 30 acres to participate. With commitment terms as short as one year, it is possible to “sell” the carbon that a forest is sequestering, often without precluding other uses and management.

Upper Valley Forest Management is affiliated with each one of the programs and can assist in the evaluation and enrollment processes.
